Calm is not the absence of emotion

Those who show nothing are credited with feeling nothing. The physiological measurements often say the opposite.

A convenient inference

Faced with a person who stays composed in a tense situation, those around spontaneously conclude that they are less affected. The inference is economical: it explains the conduct by the state, and it spares having to enquire further.

It is also reassuring for everyone, including the person concerned, whom it spares having to explain what they are containing. That is one of the reasons it is almost never checked.

What the measurements show

Experiments comparing participants asked to let nothing show with participants given no instruction regularly find, in the former, higher physiological activation, not lower. Containing mobilises resources, and that can be measured.

A neighbouring result appears as early as the observations of infants classified as avoidant in the attachment protocols of the 1970s: they ignore the parent on their return, and yet their physiological indicators signal activation comparable to that of the others. The absence of a display proves nothing about the absence of a state.

What calm costs the one who holds it

A person reputed to be solid receives, year after year, the situations others do not want to take on. Calm is socially self-sustaining: the more visible it is, the more it is called upon, and the less possible it becomes to depart from it without causing surprise.

Added to this is a documented effect on memory: people who contain their expression during an exchange retain less well what was said. The cost is therefore not only affective, it is cognitive, and it is paid at the moment when attention would be most useful.

What calm brings in

One should guard against the opposite movement, which would turn restraint into a problem. A delay between feeling and act avoids words one cannot take back, allows the moment to be chosen, and offers those around a real point of support in situations that go wrong.

The role of pillar is not an imposture: it rests on an actual capacity, and it renders a service. What deserves to be seen is that it is not free.

One sentence is enough

The difficulty comes not from the calm but from the interpretation made of it. Saying that the situation affects you, while remaining composed, is enough to undo the inference, and costs very little to the one who says it.

The reverse is true too: before someone who shows nothing, asking rather than concluding avoids attributing to them an indifference they do not have. Neither of these two operations requires changing how one functions.

Key points

Containing one's expression comes with higher physiological activation, not lower.

The absence of a visible display tells us nothing about the absence of an inner state.

The role of the solid person renders a service and is paid for, notably in available attention.
