What "I'm fine" means
The formula is the default answer to a question that is not one. It is neither a lie nor information, and replacing it is not always desirable.
A ritual question
How are you is, in most situations, not a request for information but an opening formula, on the same footing as hello. Linguists place this type of utterance among contact rituals, whose function is to open a channel, not to gather data.
Answering with a detailed description of one's state therefore constitutes, strictly speaking, a breach of format. That is why it often creates awkwardness, including when the answer is brief and perfectly measured.
The three uses of the formula
The same sentence covers at least three distinct things. A ritual performed without thinking, where it claims to say nothing. A deliberate protection, where the person knows how they are and chooses not to tell this particular interlocutor. And a sincere answer, when the person genuinely has no finer description available.
These three cases do not sound different, which explains the difficulty. The third, in particular, is regularly interpreted as the second, which produces misplaced insistence towards someone who really has nothing more to supply.
The question that opens
Research interviews have long avoided general questions, precisely because they call for general answers. A closed and situated question obtains more: what happened today, what was heaviest this week, what should have been done and was not.
The mechanism is the same as the one described by work on recall: a global memory is reconstructed and dominated by the most intense moments, whereas a precise episode is more faithfully restored. Asking less broadly obtains something more accurate.
The right not to say
A professional culture that values authenticity creates a new pressure: not sharing becomes suspect. That is a recent reversal, and it deserves to be seen as such rather than as obvious progress.
Choosing not to expose one's state to an employer, a colleague or a relative is a legitimate decision, including when the state in question is difficult. Restraint is not a symptom, and the demand for affective transparency is, in a professional setting, one demand more.
What the formula protects
There is a practical reason for the default answer: saying how you are takes time, commits your interlocutor, and calls for a follow-up. In a corridor, between two meetings, none of the three conditions is met.
The formula is therefore not an obstacle to be removed but a well-tuned tool for most situations. What deserves attention is not using it, it is having no situation at all in which one uses something else.
